Unit 14

For this unit I will be creating an alternative movie poster for a client which is The Bad Film Company to advertise their upcoming film: 36.15 Dial Code.

Alternative Movie Posters Mood Board

alternative movie poster moodboard.jpg

2 Favourites Compared To Original

quim_joker.jpg
Unknown.jpg

I chose these posters to compare because I thought that while they are similar in the theme they are presenting to the viewer, the posters are showing it in different ways. The alternative movie poster on the left uses detailed digital artwork with a darker colour scheme and three sides of the main character in the film. This gives the reader a better clue to the character development in the film and the evil persona of the character. The original poster for Joker is a dark picture taken with him at the bottom of the screen which doesn't give away a lot to the viewer but gives it a mysterious mood.

courtney_interstellar.jpg
Unknown2.jpg

I chose these posters to compare because they both are appealing in different ways. The alternative movie poster on the right uses digitally drawn images which all have different sections on the poster. The images are appealing because they give the viewer a clue to the characters and the overall themes in Interstellar. The actual movie poster is appealing because it seems sinister and the use of white which is an unusual colour in space suggests that there may be more surprises in the film.

36.15 Dial Code

The film that I will be making an alternative movie poster for is called 36.15 Dial Code. This is a French film which tells the story of a boy who stays up to see Santa but is shocked to witness Santa murder his dog and try to kill his dad. He then turns into a superhero and must get revenge to fight off evil Santa.

Initial ideas
Screenjjj.jpg

I got this picture from a screen grab of the trailer. I like it because it shows the main characters action holding a gun. this would look good as a section of action in a poster for example, in a similar way to the Interstellar alternative movie poster, this could be a section in the type of poster that mixes together different scenes of action from the movie. If I could change one thing about this picture I would add more colour to it because it is a dark photo and I want the poster to be bright and eye catching.

Screen Shojjjjj.jpg

I chose this picture from a screen grab of the trailer because it looks like something that I could use for my alternative movie poster. I like this because it shows the main character from 36.15 Dial Code in a heroic pose before going into action. If I was able to use some brighter colours for my alternative movie poster, I could use this image or something similar to show how the main character is a heroic figure.

3615 poster.jpg

This is the actual poster for the film 36.15 Dial code. I chose this as inspiration because I like the way that there is the main character in a heroic pose in the front centre of the poster. Something that I would change about this poster would be to add some brighter colours on it and possibly add some digitally drawn images. I would also add something in the background to make the main character seem more heroic.

Treatment

An Alternative Movie Poster For The Film 36.15 Dial Code
Genre:

Alternative movie poster

Target Audience:

18-25 audiences would be most suitable for this film because the age rating is 18 so nobody younger can watch it and the older generation may not be as interested in watching a 'bad film'.

Outline:

In my poster I will use bright colours to emphasise the heroic main character. In my poster I will have a digitally drawn image of the main character in the centre.

Visual Elements:

I plan to digitally draw my alternative movie poster so that it looks like a cartoon. In my poster I would like to have the main character in the foreground at the centre of my poster in a heroic pose with shoulder pads, a black bandana around his head and streaks of black paint across his face. His expression will be angry and he will be the main subject of my poster. In the background I would like to have streaks of bright warm colours coming away from him at either side and at the bottom. I would like to have a black background at the top to show that all of the action happens at night in the film. In front of the black background there will be snow falling to show that the film is set at Christmas time and that will go down to where the colours start. Finally, at the top I will have the title of the film written in a red thick writing to show the evil element of the film.

Rationale:

I think that this is a good idea because it will be eye catching and it will make people want to watch the film if they see the bright colourful poster. This poster that I am making is for a client which is called 'The Bad Film Company'.

Research:

The research that I have been doing is I have watched the trailer of my film and I have collected images of the official poster and taken screen shots of images from the trailer that I could use for my poster. I have experimented with illustrator on the computer and learned some basics about how to use the program and prepare myself to make the poster. I have also been watching the trailers and videos of the film to get a good idea of the plot so that I can figure out what to show on the poster.

Resources:

The only equipment that I will need for this unit is a computer and illustrator. I will need to use the internet to collect images for my poster and using illustrator i will create digital drawings of them.

Production Schedule

The production schedule is done to show dates or points that things are going to be done by . It is important because it gives a sense of organisation and keeping to deadlines within the production of a piece of media.

P2

Location Recce

The purpose of a location recce sheet in this task is to show things that could happen in the area. It also lists facilities that there are in the area in case of an emergency. It is a detailed description of the area and how it will be used for this project.

Risk Assessment

The purpose of a risk assessment is to make everyone aware of the hazards that are in the space, how dangerous and likely they are to happen and how to avoid them as much as possible. It makes everyone aware of how to be as careful as possible when working on the project. This was created as part of a group discussion in class.

P3

Legal And Ethical

Copyright Laws

During this Unit the main legal consideration that I had to worry about was copyright because I had to make sure that I was not copying the original poster of the film or using my work anywhere else apart from at The Bad Film Company  to promote this film. The fair use law is a law which allows me to create parody material of this poster but does not copy it identically and this would protect me from copying the poster. I would also not be allowed to spread my work anywhere to get money for it because it is for promotion purposes for the film only. I had to make sure that I was protecting any information about the film and not releasing any spoilers about the film. Although I used a screen grab of the character when digitally designing him, I did not include anything but the digital cartoon of the main character in my actual alternative movie poster. The copyright designs and patents act was created in 1988 and the purpose of it is to detail the laws against copyrighting and what copyrighting is.

Health And Safety

For this unit I was using computers in one room the whole time but to ensure that I could be as safe as possible while working on this unit, I created a risk assessment which detailed the possible risks, how effective/dangerous they are and what I would do to reduce the chances of them happening throughout the process. The purpose of a risk assessment is to keep you and the people that you are working on the project with as safe as possible. The risk assessment that I created was in compliance with the health and safety work act which was created in 1974. The health and safety work act is there to ensure that when working on any production, everyone knows the procedures that must be followed to keep everyone safe.

Seeking Permission

Before we began doing this Unit we got in contact with the bad film company to ask for permission for them to use our alternative movie posters to promote their upcoming films. They then emailed back giving permission for us to create these alternative movie posters for them to advertise their upcoming films. We did not need permission for any locations work for this unit because we were only in one location working on our digital posters. If we wanted to go to the venue of The Bad Film company, we would've had to seek permission to go there. we also would've needed permission to take photos there if that's what we wanted to put on our poster.

Fair Use

The fair use law is a law which insures that your work is not criticising, reporting or researching actual events without consent. If your work did not qualify as a fair use then you would need a fair use defence to make sure your work didn't get claimed for copyrighting actual events. This project was for commercial use only to promote the upcoming film which means that in this unit, fair use was not needed in our defence. If we were criticising the film then we would need to make sure that our work was for fair use to not have copyright infringement claim on our work.

Defamation

The Defamation act is the act of saying or implying something about an identifiable person which criticises them and could affect their reputation. There are two types of defamation; a libel defamation is a statement of television which is written or any other permanent form of criticism. A slander is a criticism about someone from word of mouth which could affect someones reputation. For this unit the poster was to be used for promotion purposes but when creating it I had to make sure that I was not criticising anyone. For my work I also had to make sure I was creating an accurate representation of the main character so as not to offend him.

Discrimination

The equality act ensures that the media you put out is not being discriminative in any way shape or form by implying prejudicial treatment of people based on their age, gender, sexuality, religion, disability or race. In film this is monitored by the BBFC who check all types of film to make sure that it is not offending anyone or causing harm to them. For this Unit I made sure that I was not going against anything on the equality act which makes my work safe to put out.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations are considerations which need to be taken to make sure that nobody is offended by the work that is put out in any way. Representation has to be considered to make sure that my work is not creating an offensive meaning to people or suggesting anything offensive about a certain bracket of people. I also had to consider whether my work was promoting gender stereotypes or presenting genders in different dynamics. The reason that there is a boy on the poster is because he is the main character in the film so I felt that he was the only person who was needed on the poster to represent the film. There are also no female roles in the film who are suitable to go on my alternative movie poster because they do not have a more main role in the film. I also had to be cautious about omitting information or ideas on people. This would include showing off too much skin or exposing something that the filmmakers, actors or The Bad Film Company did not want exposing.

3615_code_Père_Noël_1_BR_Manzor.jpg

This is the final image of the protagonist in the film 36.15 Dial Code that I decided to create a digital drawing of for my poster. It is a screen grab from a clip from the film. I decided to chose this picture because it shows him in a heroic way with lots of detail that I will be able to use when drawing him. There are also lots of dark colours in the back mixed with lighter colours in the front which I will use to brighten up the lighter colours and make him appear as heroic as possible. I also liked the reflections of the light off of his hair and body armour which I will be able to use to create more of a mix of light colours. I intend to do my digital drawing on photoshop using the lass tool and magic wand to select the shapes. I will then use the paint bucket tool to fill in the selected shape with the colour that I intend it to be. Finally I will go over with the paintbrush tool to add any detail or fill in the gaps in my artwork. I will have this original image on one of my layers so I can always refer back to it and get the right shapes.

For my poster idea I intend to have a dark blue background to show that this film is set at night time. I will also have white dots spread out evenly across the dark background to show stars. Amongst those stars I will put more smaller white dots which is snow falling. This hints to people that the film is set around Christmas when it is snowing. At the top of my alternative movie poster I will have '36.15 DIAL CODE' written in red and all capitals. This will make it stand out and hint at the violent theme of the film to the audience. At the bottom in the centre, I intend to have my digital drawing of the protagonist to display him in a heroic way and I will have a detailed picture of him which uses blurring to emphasise his facial features and reflections on the body. On either side of my protagonist I will have two light beams drawn using the lasso tool and I will use the paintbrush tool to draw a black line down the middle. To create a shine effect on the light beams I will use the paintbrush tool to draw a line along either side, then I will use the blur and fade tool to make it create a glowing effect.

Tools

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.40.36 7.jpg

This is the blur tool. I used this tool to blend colours into each other to create a shadow across the face of my character. I also used this tool to create a shining effect on the yellow beams in the background.

Screen Shot 2019-11-22 at 09.22.13jj.jpg

This is the lasso tool. I used this tool to draw round shapes that I wanted to fill in with colour This tool was useful for doing curved shapes such as the face paint and the ends of the arrows.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.42.11 6.jpg

This is the magnetic lasso tool. I used this tool to select some of the shapes from the original picture that I wanted to fill in with colour. This was one of many other tools which helped me do this job.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.40.14 6.jpg

This is the paint bucket tool. I used this tool to fill in the shapes that I had selected by clicking inside them. By double clicking I was able to make these colours more bold and make them stand out.

Screen Shot 2019-11-22 at 09.29.29jjj.jp

This is the smudge tool. I used this tool when I was creating the background to make the ripple effect on the edges of the yellow beams on either side of my character.

This is the magic wand tool. I used this tool also to make selections of the shapes that I wanted to fill in with colour. I like this tool because it automatically clings around a shape when you click on it.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.40.00 2.jpg

This is the polygonal lasso tool. I used this tool to select shapes which had straight edges. This tool only uses straight lines to select shapes. I clicked on each corner around my shape which eventually joined up and meant that I was able to fill it in.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.39.40 5.jpg

This is the crop tool. I used this tool in the final stages to crop the area that my poster to make it look even with the text position and to avoid it having too much room on top.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.41.22 4.jpg

This is the paintbrush tool, I used this tool the most out of all of them. I used this to fill in blank areas between shapes that I had created. I also used it to draw shadows and reflections on the outfit by changing the size and density of the brush.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.41.39 9.jpg

This is the quick selection tool which is used to select shapes that I wanted to fill in with colour. It works by dragging the mouse around the area that is being selected and it moves and moulds to the shape.

Screen Shot 2019-11-15 at 12.41.12 3.jpg

This is the text tool. I used this tool to create the title at the top of my page. I did this by choosing a font which looked heroic because thats the mood I was going for. I then changed the font size so that it was larger on the page and made it red to show the horror elements of the film.

This is a screen recording of me using the lasso and paint bucket tool to create a digital drawing of the end of one of the arrows as well as selecting a bright colour to make it stand out on my alternative movie poster.

Final Piece

I have enjoyed this unit as a whole because it has meant that I was able to gain experience in creating a piece of media for a film company and have them use it to advertise their film. I have had the intention to show my character in a heroic way but also show that there are elements of horror in the film. I did not want to give away too much in my alternative movie poster about what happened in the film but I have chosen some specific colours and used creative techniques to show themes that come up in the film. I have enhanced the meaning of the original image by recreating a screenshot from the film and by using digital drawing I was able to create a high quality, bright, eye catching image. I was able to brighten the colours and create a character who looked as heroic as I intended him to be. I was also able to use digital drawing to send messages to the viewers such as the setting as winter at night.

My design is of high enough technical standard that it was shown to the public during the screening of 36.15 Dial Code on Tuesday 17th December at The Bad Film Club.

The Bad Film Company used our posters to promote the film when it was showed in the cinema. However, we were not sent a picture of our posters by them. The first group who's films were showed had pictures taken of their posters but the company did not send ours.

I have really enjoyed doing this unit and I have learned many skills about how to use photoshop to create a digital drawing using a template using many different tools. I was also able to create a product for a company which has taught me about how keeping strictly to deadlines is very important.
